TODI

History tells that Todi was founded by an Umbrian population, the Veii Umbri, on the border with the Etruscan territory and that for this reason its name derives from the term “Tular” which in the Osco-Umbrian language means “set of border stumps”.

Evidence of this passage can be found in the Etruscan finds discovered in the area and today preserved in the Civic Museum of Todi , on the upper floors of the Palazzo del Capitano and the Palazzo del Popolo, which also house the Art Gallery and the Town Hall.

In Piazza del Popolo, the secular and religious center of the city, next to the two buildings, the Palazzo dei Priori and the Cattedrale della Santissima Annunziata stand opposite each other. The first, with its Gothic and austere style, clearly demonstrates its medieval origins: currently the seat of the Pretura, inside it is also possible to admire the “Sala delle Udienze”, decorated with fourteenth-century frescoes.

WHAT TO SEE

The presence of so many buildings that mark the succession of so many historical eras makes Piazza del Popolo one of the most beautiful squares in Italy but the rest of the city also has its jewels to offer, treasures that are absolutely worth visiting even if they are less known.

One of these is the Church of San Fortunato of early Christian origin. Located in the area of the acropolis of Todi, the main attraction is its bell tower. For those who do not suffer from vertigo, climbing the more than 150 steps that lead to the top of the tower offers a unique emotion: a 360-degree view of the city of Todi and the spectacular panorama of the Tiber Valley below.

Another experience to try is the route that winds along 5 kilometers of tunnels under the city. By booking a guided tour , it will be possible to admire more than 30 cisterns from the Roman, pre-Roman and medieval eras arranged along the underground tunnels.
